Healthy Diet

HAPPY AND HEALTHY DOGS AND PUPPIES

We recommend a high quality kibbles that is a large breed puppy food which is AAFCO certified. puppy food should be kept in an air tight storage container to keep for going stale. Your puppy has been started on a Large Breed Puppy Food.  We recommend  brands such as Iams, Diamond Natural, or Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food as well. When changing a dog’s food, it is best to change over the course of a week by mixing the two brands together slowly so the puppy doesn’t get an upset stomach. The large breed puppy food should be fed for the first 2 years of their life. Table foods are not recommended, especially foods that contain sugar or yeast.

Puppies should be fed 1/2-1 cup of kibbles three times a day. If your puppy finishes it’s food within 3-4 minutes, more food should be given. Take the food up after 30 minutes if not eaten.

A few of the additions are recommended, but not required.

  • Raw or boiled eggs
  • 1 scoop of White Mountain Whole Milk Yogurt (no sugar)
  • 3 tablespoons ground pumpkin seeds
  • Spoonful of raw canned pumpkin
  • Liver stew (see recipe below)
  • Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar

LIVER STEW

2 containers of the HEB fresh chicken liver

3 quarts of water

16 oz package of steam-able frozen veggies

2 tablespoons of coconut oil

The puppies love liver stew. We buy fresh chicken liver from HEB. Combine the liver, water, and oil in a large pot. Bring to a boil for 30 minutes. Add a package of frozen steam-able vegetables and continue simmering for an additional 20-30 minutes on low. Remove from heat and let cool for 1 hour.  You can also blend or emulsify the entire mixture before separating into quart jars and storing in the refrigerator. Before serving, heat on the stove top or in the microwave before adding to the kibbles at feeding time. Be sure to only add just enough to wet the kibbles – too much can cause loose stool.
